Bridges

Dental bridges are a great way to replace missing teeth. Your existing teeth are used to literally create a bridge to cross the area where your tooth is missing. Bridges are made from gold, metal, alloys, or porcelain to ensure that they are strong and durable.

Fixed (Permanently Cemented) Bridges

A bridge, by definition, is a link or connection between two permanent structures.  A dental bridge attaches the replacement ("false" tooth or teeth) to the natural teeth on either side of the gap.  This bridge acts as your new teeth, closing the gap and restoring your smile. Bridges are often constructed of gold or metal foundations with porcelain fused to the foundation.  This ensures that the bridge will support the normal functions of the mouth. It involves preparing ("drilling") the adjacent teeth for crowns ("caps") that will act as the abutments for the permanently cemented (nonremovable) bridge. An impression is taken of the prepared teeth so that the laboratory can create a custom made bridge for the patient. This bridge is then cemented during the appointment following the initial preparation appointment.

Removable Partial Bridges (also called Removable Partial Dentures)

Patients who have too many missing teeth to support a fixed bridge, or who want a more economical alternative to a fixed bridge will often opt for a removable partial bridge. This does not involve extensive preparation ("drilling") of the abutment teeth. However, it utilizes metal clasps to help grip the abutment teeth. Also, a removable partial bridge is more bulky in the mouth than a fixed bridge and it needs to be removed during the night.

Like any other treatment, planning for bridges should be done on a case by case basis, with the direct consultation of the dentist, to insure the best treament for each patient.
